Wax Father
Each day
the son came for more, scraping comb
freshly laid, kneeling
apologetic. The father had
collapsed, the boy
wasnât ready, so he built a replica of the old man
in order to save him. When
the legs gave out he fashioned legs,
when the hands began to tremble
he fashioned hands,
& as the fever spread he made a head. At the
bedside, he studied the creases edging
his fatherâs eyes, the bones pressing up from the cheeks,
the places the skull
turned inward. The lungs filledâ
he built a torso. As he finished
each limb, each organ, he carried it to the church
& pinned it above the altar, until nearly
his entire body hung there.
